In my life I have met very few people as cool as Shormey. Her unfazed, humble and easygoing demeanor somehow makes her more iconic to her often breathless fanbase. This has translated brilliantly to the shiny screen of YouTube for her latest music video, a testament to her methodic ways in a hapless world:

Boogie Island, directed by Hank (hank.work)

I recently had the opportunity to chat with Shormey about her latest EP, a compilation of lo-fi tracks called “God Bless Bob Ross,” which was released on a limited run of sunny yellow cassettes from Citrus City (now sold out). Bandcamp proceeds from this release were donated entirely to the family of Breonna Taylor.

“[T]he story behind god bless bob ross is that i basically had these random songs that i wanted to put out on a compilation. i would just burn those songs on cdrs and give them out. one night me and a couple of friends were making the cdrs and watching bob ross. and it needed a name so i decided to name it after him,” said Shormey.

Despite the semblance of effortlessness, Shormey works hard, taking on extended tours (pre-COVID 19) and putting on sets that get crowds moving their feet. “[Making music is] probably a lifestyle i do it all the time,” she stated frankly in an email. The interview was quick and her responses were brief; in a rare moment, I wasn’t bombarded with details by an oversharing artist. My favorite part was when I asked Shormey “If you could be any animal for a day what would it be?” Her response: “probably a giraffe.”

Shormey’s music can be found on her Bandcamp as well as streamed on Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music and more.
